Origins

Arnica montanna is native to European mountains and is divided into two subspecies, Arnica montanna and Arnica montanna atlantica. There are many strains of Arnica, due to the demand for the herb in homeopathic medicine and its need to adapt and survive in the wild.  Each one differs slightly, due to the region it grows in. Arnica montanna is the most common of the genus of about 40 species. It is in the Asteraceae plant family, also known as the daisy family. Farm raising the herb has not been easy because the herb will not grow in fertilized soils. Some cultivators in Germany have found a way to successfully harvest Arnica montanna through reduced lime content in the soil, good aeration, and proper drainage.

The whole Arnica plant is used, from the flowers to the roots, in producing Arnica oil and extracts. Arnica preparations such as gels, oils, creams, ointments, and diluted ingestibles have been used in medicine for hundreds of years. The earliest documented uses of Arnica date back to the 14th and 15th centuries.

The Power of Nature in a Bottle!

Properties

Today the plant is popularly used in homeopathic medicine to assist with anti-inflammatory, analgesic, and antimicrobial issues. It may also be useful for reducing the chances of infection. There is clinical evidence that Arnica montanna reduces swelling and bruising. The herb has many agents that contribute to its ability to ease inflammation, including a compound known as helenalin. The chemical constituents of helenalin, and its derivatives occurring in the plant, are allergenic and should never be applied to broken skin. Its analgesic properties may help soothe pains associated with sprains, bruises, and other injuries.  Not to be eaten, large quantities can become toxic to the body when ingested.

Homeopathic medicine values the power of Arnica to support the heart and strengthen weariness in the elderly. It can also work as a stimulant for kidneys. Topical preparations were used to treat boils, insect bites, joint pain, sprains, bruising, and more.  Arnica is best used topically. You can use Arnica tincture in a foot bath to relieve tenderness and pain. It is also said that massaging Arnica into the scalp can help increase hair growth.
